Atlantis” was commissioned in 1992 by the Toronto Centre of the RCCO, as part of the "Toronto Organ Series". The piece is in 3 sections, an Overture, Passacaglia and Epilogue. The Passacaglia variations build like the waves threatening Atlantis. The tide rises and falls. In a series of massive chords, the ocean claims the civilization of the legendary city. The composer describes this as a "metaphor for the swarming of forces which finally submerge life into death. The piece ends with a reverberation of the opening material, like the ever diminishing ripples of a life that has passed." It is dedicated to the memory of Kuzmenko's father.
